Body Image I
Women look to clothing and make-up to cover up what they do not see as fit to present in public. Clothing and make-up serve as vices for women to empower them. By decorating oneself you are building just enough confidence to go out into the world. However, these vices may not necessarily be chosen women, but rather for women. These vices are thrown at women by society. Society tells women to cover up all of their weaknesses. Generally, all women will call themselves fat at some point. This is typically the most popular body image issue. In this piece, a woman who is average weight for her height and that would be deemed healthy has her insecurities written on her body. In the beginning of the piece, she appears to be accepting of herself and exposes herself. However, society tells her that her appearance is not approved. Therefore, she covers herself in clothing and make-up until she reaches the minimum of how she must appear in order to be accepted.

From the moment women step away from privacy, they enter into a world that praises a certain body type and appearance. In todays society, every inch of a persons appearance is critiqued. This type of judgement is especially prevalent within young women. Often, women hate their bodies and desire to change themselves in order to conform to society. However, it is likely that many of the things they would like to change are permanent. Therefore, these imperfections must be masked with clothing and make-up. In this piece, a video of a conversation facilitated between four eighteen year old women, myself included, plays. In the conversation, the discussion is primarily about loathing our appearances. Once the video begins, a young woman steps onto the screen. She disrobes and clothes herself with a transparent garment. She stands nude in front of a crowd of people. The last question in the conversation asks if it is possible for someone to stand nude in front of a crowd of people. The general answer is that for them, no, however, for some people, yes. This piece confronts body image and portrays that regardless of someones body type whether they fit into social norms or not, all people have body image issues. This is about acceptance and gaining confidence to do anything, even stand nude in front of a crowd.

Often, women are recognized by their body. The actual person and personality is disregarded. In this piece, two women with two different body shapes are examined from several angles. Their faces are unrecognizable. All that can be seen is their silhouette. On the left side, there is a woman who weighs in at approximately 110 pounds. On the right, there is a woman who weighs in at approximately 195 pounds. The women are juxtaposed to show the vast difference in their body shape. This piece is representative of both women not endorsing their body type even though they may comply to societies standards.
